NAOSH Week Safety Olympics |
|
Time: 1:00 PM Event Location & Address: National FastFreight #22029 Township Rd.531A Acheson Hosting Organization: Calyx Event Description: National Fast Freight, Edmonton Terminal NAOSH Week April 20/10 National fast freight Edmonton has planned the following NAOSH Week events: -Edmonton Safety Olympics – May 3/10 thru May 7/10 -Safety Instruction – May 3/10 thru May 7/10 -Company Safety BBQ – May 7/10 It is the Edmonton terminal’s plan to hold a week long safety oriented Olympics for approximately 1 hour per day from Monday May 3/10 thru Friday May 7/10. We are going to hold four separate, 1 hour long mock safety events which we hope to cover a wide range of everyday work practices and some of the safety processes that our terminal has in place. These events will include the following: - The Fire Response Race: We will create small contained fires and will time each team on their response time and actions as well as the proper use of our terminals fire extinguishers. Separate parts of the process will also be marked from 1 to 3 on a point system ( 3 being best ) depending on how safely the contestant performs each task. This event is to teach the proper use of our terminals fire extinguishers and how to stay calm and extinguish a small containable workplace fire. -PPE Dress up event: We will be laying out Industry standard PPE such as Steal Toe footwear, Coveralls, Reflective Vests, Hard Hats, Safety Glasses, and Dust masks. We will be timing the contestants on the amount of time taken to fully gear up and return to the starting point. -2 Person Forklift Course: We will set up a controlled, forklift inspection/obstacle course covering as many industry safety processes as possible. We will time the teams on how long it takes two separate, qualified forklift operators to perform a variety of possible everyday forklift procedures. Separate parts of process will also be marked on a point system, depending on how safely the contestant performs each task. This event is to teach the proper procedures involved in the daily operations of our terminals forklifts. This will include forklift inspections, the proper, safe way to transport freight, ramp usage, handling propane and pedestrian awareness. -Supervisor ( Special ) Event: We will hold a special event just to allow all company personnel to have a (Dangerous Spill Clean-up) good laugh at their daily supervisors. The event will begin with the Supervisors dressing up in their disposable booties, coveralls, rubber Gloves(duct taping the joints), putting on half mask respirators and cleaning up a mock spill. This will be a timed event. We plan to form 4 separate teams made up of 1 customer service member, 1 dispatch member, and 2 warehouse members.( 2 of these members must be forklift certified ) 1 member will compete in the Fire Extinguisher Race, 1 member will complete in the DG Spill clean up, and 2 members will complete in the Forklift Course. Each team will be supplied with a copy of this announcement. Some events will be two team, side by side races while others may be individual races due to space requirements and operational needs. These will be individually timed. Upon the completion of each daily event, one volunteer supervisor who feels adequate in the overall knowledge of proper procedures for that event will, give a verbal demonstration of the errors made by the contestants while completing the events. In addition, they will be providing a demonstration of the proper, expected safe procedures necessary for completing such tasks on a daily basis in our specific environment. It is our hope that throughout the entire NAOSH Week, we will be able to briefly teach or refresh old knowledge of our everyday safety policies. If specialized instruction are deemed necessary as a result of the way these tasks are performed then appropriate arrangements will be monitored and/or made according to the results of each event. As much as we wish these events to form a team attitude and be fun, we also wish to use these Olympics to act as a general training exercise that will be somewhat fun for all regardless of whether or not the specific issue applies to that person’s daily routine. We are a small terminal (approximately 30 employees ), yet we still find ourselves at times being unaware of the needs and safety procedures of our fellow employees, especially in different work areas. Due to our limited interaction between such departments such as, for example, Customer service and Operations, these events should help educate people to different safety obstacles that could be encountered on a daily basis. Our goal with these 1 hour “ Safety Olympics ” is to make all employees aware of other safety areas that may not always come into their everyday operations. Hopefully creating a much safer, overall work place for all while maintaining a team based attitude towards safety. The general, goal of these Olympics is too form a broad based knowledge of everyday operations for all employees while still maintaining as safe a work place as possible. The final stage of our NAOSH Week is to have our 1st annual company BBQ to celebrate one year no lost time accidents, which we hope will create a team atmosphere and promote a company wide safety based program.
